Are Scars Dangerous?

Are Scars Dangerous?

I love the Indiana Jones movies. One of my favorite scenes is from the first film, where he shows Marian all his scars and tells her where they hurt so she can kiss them.

Scars are no big deal, right? I certainly have my fair share of them after six breast cancer surgeries.

What if scars were preventing your body from truly healing?

Scars, the Nervous System & Neural Therapy

Most of us think of scars as no big deal, just something left behind after surgery, an injury, or acne. However, research shows that around 10% of individuals with scars experience neuropathic pain, indicating that scars can have a deeper impact beyond the surface of the skin. In some cases, they can interfere with how your nervous system communicates with the rest of your body.

Your skin is packed with nerves that constantly send signals to your brain. When the skin is injured, those signals can get disrupted. Even years later, a scar can continue to create tension, pain, or symptoms in areas that seem totally unrelated.

What Is Neural Therapy? And Why Did I Try It?

Neural therapy is a gentle treatment that helps “reset” irritated or misfiring nerves. It uses small injections of a local anesthetic into scars or specific areas of the body to restore healthy nerve communication.

The goal isn’t to numb anything long-term, it’s to help the nervous system calm down and function more normally again.

After my last surgery, my body started to make a lot of scar tissue. My surgeon told me the surgery was not successful, and he would need to go back in and fix it. One of my podcast guests mentioned Neural Therapy and I thought, “Why not?”

Why Treat Scars?

Some scars act like interference zones in the nervous system. Treating them may help reduce chronic pain, improve mobility, ease inflammation, and support overall balance in the body. Many people are surprised to find that addressing an old scar can improve symptoms in a completely different area.

Today’s podcast is with Dr. Alison Egan. She is the injection expert who worked on my surgical scars. Honestly, this is information that you need to know if you have ever had a surgical scar! I wish I had known about Neural Therapy before my first surgery.

My results have been surprising. So much so that when I went to my oncologist for my final five-year check-in, she said she saw no issues from my last surgery, WOW!

Meet Dr. Allison Egan

I love my job as a Naturopathic physician! I am honored when a person chooses me to help investigate their health and guide them down the path of wellness.

I’ve spent a lifetime using and abusing my body through collegiate rowing, professional wilderness guiding, ski instructing, river rafting and sailing because of this I know a thing or two about injuries first hand!

I know how frustrating injuries can be and what the long recovery journey entails. I was drawn to Naturopathic medicine through my own search to optimize health, prevent injury, and recover outside of the conventional medical model. I’ve believed in the body’s ability to heal long before I attended naturopathic medical school, and found my own path to physical recovery through natural therapies, hands on treatments (like injection therapies), and gentle movement.
