On my quest to answer the question, “Why Did I Get Cancer?” I have stumbled across some pretty interesting information. Little did I know, some of my favorite everyday products that I was using contained some toxic chemicals….
Did you know that nail polish is considered HAZARDOUS WASTE???
According to the site, Earth911: The U.S. EPA considers nail polish household hazardous waste (HHW) due to the toxic chemicals swarming within that bottle of shimmer and shine.

So I decided to clean out my bathroom drawer, and I found about a dozen old nail polish bottles. I know that it’s not good for the environment to toss it in the garbage, so I went online to find a way to dispose of it without causing damage.
After cancer, I’m trying to reduce the toxins in my life, not increase them.
Is it possible to still enjoy a manicure or use lotions and makeup without increasing my toxin load?
The good news is, YES!
But you have to do your due diligence, and I AM! So here are the top three toxic offenders in nail polish:
- Toluene: A solvent to make ingredients stick together and dry quickly, toluene is a known carcinogen with side effects like dizziness, headaches, and nausea.
- Formaldehyde: This hardener and preservative is a known carcinogen and may cause skin and respiratory tract infections.
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): DBP prevents chipping and is a known carcinogen and hormone disruptor. In addition, it may cause early menopause and reproductive harm in babies.
