I’m going to cut right to the question that has been on my mind lately: Have you heard of nanoplastics?
Nanoplastics are microscopic pieces of plastic that are all around us. In fact, my latest podcast guest, Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy, shared that we ingest a credit card worth of plastic EACH DAY….
And yes, you guessed it right. This is not doing any favors to our health.
The latest research shows that these nano plastic/particles, due to their small size and molecular properties, can penetrate the cells and cause harmful effects.
These plastics can impact our levels of inflammation and change the functioning of our gut biome. So let me tell you, having more inflammation in your body and a gut that’s not fully functioning is a recipe for disaster.
I’ve relied heavily on using plastics for the last twenty years. Let’s face it, plastics make life easier, from water bottles to Ziplocs to buying salad greens in plastic bags.
I’m looking for ways to cut my use of plastic. I know I need to make some changes to my lifestyle, and here are some simple swaps I’m adding to my routine:
- Stainless steel water bottles instead of plastic.
- Glass storage containers instead of plastic.
- Wrapping leftovers in wax paper instead of plastic wrap.
- I use silicon lids to cover bowls instead of plastic wrap.
- Buying kitchen staples in glass, not plastic.
As I mentioned above, Dr. Leigh Erin Conneally and I had a great conversation about nanoplastics and their role in our everyday health.
